ISLAMABAD: Petrol price has surged by Rs5.58 per litre and high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs4.18 for September 9, taking the two-day increase to Rs18.48 for petrol and Rs7.90 for diesel.
According to the Petroleum Division, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), under the revised petroleum pricing mechanism issued by the Federal Government, has revised the applicable ex-depot prices of petroleum products for September 9, 2026.
The ex-depot price of Motor Spirit (petrol) has risen from Rs358.77 to Rs364.35 per litre, while the ex-depot price of HSD has increased from Rs381.77 to Rs385.95 per litre.
With the latest adjustment, petrol has become Rs18.48 per litre more expensive in just two days, following the Rs12.90 per litre increase announced for September 8. HSD, meanwhile, has become Rs7.90 per litre costlier during the same period.
The back-to-back increases are set to further squeeze consumers, with motorists now paying Rs364.35 per litre for petrol and Rs385.95 per litre for HSD.
The latest petrol hike will directly affect millions of motorcycle and car users who rely on petrol for daily commuting. People travelling to workplaces, businesses, educational institutions and other destinations will face higher fuel expenses.
Petrol is also extensively used by taxis, ride-hailing vehicles, delivery services and other light transport. The latest increase will consequently add to operating costs for individuals and businesses dependent on petrol-powered vehicles.
The impact of the HSD increase is expected to extend across the wider economy, as diesel is extensively used by trucks, buses, commercial transport and agricultural machinery.
Higher diesel costs can raise the expense of transporting agricultural produce, food items, industrial raw materials and manufactured goods. Transport operators facing increased fuel costs may also seek to recover the additional burden through higher freight charges.
The successive fuel price increases could therefore add further pressure to household budgets and business operating expenses, particularly through higher commuting and transportation costs.
The latest adjustment comes just a day after petrol was increased by Rs12.90 per litre and HSD by Rs3.72 per litre for September 8, making the latest increase the second consecutive daily hike.
Under the revised petroleum pricing mechanism, petroleum prices are being adjusted on a daily basis in line with the applicable pricing formula.
The latest increase means consumers will now have to absorb another jump in fuel costs, with petrol reaching Rs364.35 per litre and HSD Rs385.95 per litre from September 9.
