Monitoring Report

ISLAMABAD: Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, has been ordered to pay $25 billion in a New Mexico case over allegations that it misled the public about how it used Facebook users’ personal data, according to the provided report.

Accordingto ARY News Urdu, a judge in New Mexico issued the order on Wednesday following a two-week trial earlier this year, during which the company’s handling of user data and its public statements about privacy practices were examined.

The judge reportedly said the alleged misrepresentations went beyond Facebook’s data-related practices and reached the core of the company’s business operations.

If upheld, the $25 billion penalty would represent a major financial liability for Meta. However, the company’s response to the ruling and any potential appeal would be important in determining the case’s next steps.

Meta has faced other legal challenges this year involving its business practices and user protection. These include a reported $18 billion settlement with California concerning child safety.

The case highlights growing legal scrutiny of major technology companies over data privacy, transparency and their responsibility to protect users, particularly children, across social media platforms.
